  • FRA of Sick Day, WI3+ M2 moderate snow on Storm Mountain

On October 28th 2019, Naoise Ó Muircheartaigh, Taylor Sullivan, and Gerry Dumouchel climbed what appears to be the FRA of a route on Storm Mountain in a NE facing cirque between Vista and Arnica Lakes and are calling it Sick Day, WI3+ M2 moderate snow 350m. Bring screws and a single rack from #.1-1. Pins may be useful if rappelling the route (recommended).

NOTE: The snow on this route, particularly the final pocket before the ridge, may pose significant avalanche risk due to wind loading and should only be attempted in very good conditions.

Approach via the Twin Lakes trail, breaking west across a pond (before the climb in the trees up to Arnica Lake) and moving up through the drainage towards the obvious wide strip of ice as shown in photos 1,2 and 3. Rack up at the base of a short (5m) ice step before bumping up to the main flow.

P1 and 2: WI3+, 100m. Climb the fat, featured flow to a small isolated bulge and screw belay at the base of a snow ramp. The small cave midway on the right was used for a screw belay, but was not as hospitable as it looked from the ground.

P3: 140m of moderate snow into a constricted gully with a belay in rock using small gear.

P4: WI 3+, 45m. Climb the next ice flow and exit via easy mixed terrain and a couple of meters of snow to a belay in a rock alcove (photo 4).

NOTE: Descending the route from here is recommended and would save significant time returning to the car.

P5: 70m of moderate snow with a few easy mixed moves to the ridge and a terrain belay. Be cautious of loose blocks.

Descent: Continue N along the ridge to the sub-peak and then down via the NW ridge route.

Unfortunately our GPS device malfunctioned and no location data is available.
