Lady of the Rockies, WI3 30m

    FA-G.Cornell, March 2007

Reminiscent of a 90ft statue overlooking Butte, Montana, this south-facing ice stands out from one spot along Hwy#1A, very high up Grotto Mountain when the hills are free of snow. You can spot it just east of Rat?s Nest before the #1A steepens.

Park as for Rat?s Nest Cave and follow the good, scenic trail above the left side of the canyon for 1.5hrs for 2/3 of the way up Grotto Mtn! Leave the trail when the falls are seconds away. Either rap a tiny cliff (tat) or walk down around right to the base.

Climb the ice in three separate tiers the last being the steepest and longest. Rap from trees or walk off (you top out about 10m from the Grotto summit trail). Has enough room for 3 TR ropes.

The rocky peak above is a false summit but would make a good extension of the day to scramble to the true summit. Furthermore, there are two steep drips dangling off a cliff-band about 15 minutes further up the mountain.
