  • Mount Fryatt - August 20-21, 2019

This one was a bit of an endeavour in redemption. In 2017, we attempted to climb the W ridge (III 5.6 800m). A number of factors--rained out on original summit day, party of 4, routefinding errors, rope getting stuck twice--led to a 23.5h suffer fest that fell 150m short of the summit (bivy-high point-bivy-car), still my longest day on the go. I was committed to returning to the W ridge and completing it, rather than the easier SW face (II 5.4 400m), mostly out of stubbornness. When other plans fell through, I hopped on with Richard, Devan, and Brian and we once again departed up the Geraldine Lakes Valley.

Driving Beta: The Geraldine Lake Road was in surprisingly poor shape (2019) with deep water holes, though mostly with solid bases. Some switchbacks were greasy and it felt a bit marginal in my Ford Fusion.

What followed was another exceptionally long and taxing day, but at least one that ended with a summit. More info in the photo captions.
